Description

If you are self-employed in UK dentistry, the rules nobody told you are costing you money. First Year Self-Employed is the structured money management course built specifically for UK Dental Care Professionals, hygienists, therapists, locum dental nurses, orthodontic therapists, and clinical dental technicians. Most personal finance content was written for someone with a payslip. You are not that someone. You are a self-employed clinician running a business HMRC sees as identical to a self-employed plumber, even if you wear scrubs and work in someone else's practice. That changes everything: how much tax you actually owe, when it is due, what you can claim, what insurance you need, what pension you can join, and what the new NHS contract reforms mean and do not mean for your retirement.

The PIN/NHSPS confusion alone costs years of pension contributions for thousands of UK DCPs. From 2024/25, hygienists and therapists can lead courses of treatment under the new NHS contract reforms. From 2 April 2026, dental nurses with a PIN can apply fluoride varnish independently. These are real, important changes and they have created a widespread misconception. Your DCP PIN does not equal NHS Pension access. NHSBSA's own guidance is explicit: the only self-employed individuals who can pay into the NHS Pension Scheme are GPs, GDPs, OMPs, and non-GP Providers. Dental nurses, hygienists, therapists, and orthodontic therapists working self-employed in primary care cannot pay into NHSPS, regardless of how many PINs or Personal IDs they hold. Most existing UK content either misses this entirely or is dentist-focused and ignores DCPs altogether. This course does not.

Topics that will be covered:

  • Self-Employment for DCPs: confirming genuine self-employment versus disguised employment, HMRC registration, the three-pot system calibrated for DCP earning levels (not generic dentist incomes)
  • Worked Examples Across All Four DCP Archetypes
  • The UK Tax System for DCPs
  • Allowable Expenses for DCPs
  • HMRC Mileage Rules
  • The PIN/NHSPS Question Resolved
  • Pension Vehicles That Actually Apply to DCPs
  • The Clinician Protection Portfolio
  • Self-Employed Maternity
  • DCP Career Pathways
  • The Written One-Year Plan
